FAQ's
Why does my knee hurt when I run? The knee is the largest joint in the body. Knee pain can be felt in all the different areas of the knee as it is a very complex joint. There are many causes of knee pain, some of which can feel worse when running. Issues can often arise when we increase our running mileage or try to increase our speed. It can often be caused by imbalances in our running style, poor footwear or previous injuries our body may be compensating for. Your Osteopath will assess your running style to identify the cause of the knee pain and give you appropriate treatment and self-care to get you back running pain free.
Should I stretch or not? There are many different views on whether stretching is good for us. Often, certain muscle groups can be tight and restrict the way a joint moves. However, stretching a cold muscle can cause more soreness and prevent us from moving efficiently. Moving the body through the range of motion it is about to do, in a controlled way can help to warm up the body and increase blood flow to the muscles, preparing them for activity. Stretching the muscles post activity can help to maintain the range of motion acheived in the joint and prevent the muscle from tightening up as it cools down reducing post-exercise muscle soreness. I will always offer exercise and self management advice to ensure you feel you have the tools to maintain your fitness and exercise regime.
